(Cryptomeria japonica) The Japanese red-cedar, known in Japanese as the sugi (杉) literally "hair-tree",  is a long-lived evergreen conifer that can grow very large over time. Hardy to zone 6, it can grow in mild seasonal climates in Canada. In its native Japan, it can reach over 70m in height with a trunk diameter of over 4m!  Japanese red cedar enjoys rich, moist soils with good drainage. We are delighted to feature a customer submission on our blog this week. We received photos of these Norway Spruce seedlings from an order placed in late October. After an unsuccessful germination, the customer tried again using a different planting method and is now raising some beautiful new seedlings. Some have now been transplanted to larger pots to give them more room.
