(Pinus cembra)
Swiss stone pine is native to the Alps in Europe and has a good cold tolerance in Canadian climates. Slow growing, it reaches 20-25m maximum height and has a trunk diameter of up to 1m. Its foliage is needle-like leaves in groups of 5 with a white underside. It excels in light sandy loam soils but can accommodate rocky environments as well. Although small, the seeds are edible with the shell removed and are enjoyed by wildlife and humans alike.
Germination: Soak in water for 24 hours. Warm stratify for 60 days, then cold stratify for 120 days. Plant 1-2cm deep in sterile potting mixture.
