(Pinus thunbergii)
Japanese black pine is a medium-sized evergreen conifer native to China and Japan with an irregular growth habit that makes it an iconic tree for bonsai growers. Trees are known to reach 40 meters in height, although this is not common. Most trees grow to between 5-20m, with green needles in fascicles of two. Cones are 4-7cm long, egg-shaped with a greyish colour. This species, like most pines, prefers full sun with well drained soil.
Germination: Soak seeds for 24 hours. Cold stratify in fridge for 30 days. Plant in quality soil or seed plugs, 5mm below surface with a light covering. Keep at room temperature and lightly water. Germination typically occurs within 2 weeks.
