(Larix decidua)
European larch is a tree native to the mountainous region of central Europe, specifically the Alps and Carpathian mountain ranges. It is a medium to large sized tree, reaching 20m up to 45m in height, and a very long-lived tree which can exceed 1000 years in the best conditions. Conical in form, it has soft deciduous flat green needlelike leaves 2-4cm long that are borne in clusters at the end of short shoots. The leaves turn a bright yellow in autumn before being shed from the tree. The cones are erect, ovoid and 3-6cm and brown when mature, often remaining on the branch for many years turning gray before falling.
Germination: Soak seeds for 24 hours in water. Cold stratify for 30-60 days at 4 degrees C. Sow 1-2cm deep in moist sterile potting mix.
