(Pinus tabuliformis)
Chinese pine, also known as Chinese red pine is a medium-sized evergreen native to China and Korea, this tree can grow in Ontario as well. It reaches 20-30m in height with a flat topped crown that gives it a tabular shape due to the horizontal branching pattern. The needles are deep green to grey-green, shiny and 5-15cm long, straight to curved and in bundles of 2, occasionally 3 leaves. Bark is scaly, fissured, pale-brown to grey as it ages. Cones occur as singular or in pairs, and are brown, egg-shaped, 5-8cm long and 3-5cm wide. Picturesque when mature, this tree is popular in bonsai gardens and makes a good specimen tree.
Germination: Soak in water for 24 hours. Cold stratify for 30 days. Plant 1-2cm deep in sterile moist potting mix.
