Thornless honey locust is a tree native to southern Ontario and is a tall tree with fine compound leaves that provide a very pleasant shade in the summer. This thornless variety that should grow less prickly than the wild variety. The shade produced is partial unlike other shade trees that cast a dark gloom, so grass and gardens alike will still thrive under the shade of this tree. Honey locusts produce yellow-green flowers in spring time and in the fall, the fruit matures into a flat pod filled with bean-like seeds. Overall this is an easy to maintain tree that is often chosen for cities and parks, because of its salt tolerance and general resilience and easy maintenance. The tree should be straight pruned while growing if a vertical projection is desired.
Germination / Scarification: Place the seeds in very hot water, let stand for 24 hours. Repeat process multiple times for best results ensuring all seeds are imbibed. Sow seeds 1-2cm in moist soil bed and await germination.
