(Pinus gerardiana)
Chilghoza pine is native to central Asia and the western Himalayas. It grows 15-25m tall and has flaky bark that peels away in strips. The dark green needle-like leaves are in groups of 3 and average 6-10cm long. Cones are 10-20cm long, and about 8-12cm wide when open. The species is remarkable for its seeds, which are quite long, 15-25mm with a thin shell that makes them a popular choice for use edible pine nuts. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil.
Germination: Soak in water for 24 hours. Cold stratify for 30 days. Plant 1-2cm deep in a sterile potting medium.
