(Pinus albicaulis)

Whitebark pine, native to the mountains of western Canada, is a slow-growing species of pine that can grow at very high altitudes and in cold dry climates. Growing to 30m in height in favourable conditions, its needles are yellow-green and in bundles of five, usually 3-6cm long. The bark is bright white compared to other pines, and has a distinctive look to it as it ages. The sizeable seeds of whitebark pine are sought after by birds and the trees rely on them to help distribute the seeds across large distances.
